What collagen peptides are

Unlike everything else in this section, "collagen peptides" is not a single molecule but a food ingredient: collagen from animal or fish sources broken enzymatically into short peptides. It is taken orally, sold as a supplement, and does not go through drug approval.

Where the evidence stands

This is one of the few areas with multiple randomised placebo-controlled trials of a non-drug peptide product. Skin trials and pooled analyses report modest improvements in hydration and elasticity[1][2]; a 24-week trial in athletes reported reduced activity-related joint pain[3]; and a small trial in older sarcopenic men reported greater lean-mass gain when collagen peptides were combined with resistance training[4]. A tiny crossover study suggested gelatin plus vitamin C before exercise raises a marker of collagen synthesis[5].

The pattern is consistent: real but small effects, short trials, and heavy involvement of ingredient manufacturers. That earns promising, not established.
